Dell XPS M1210 Memory Upgrade
I recently purchased 2x2GB Memory upgrades for my fantastic Dell XPS M1210. To upgrade the memory there were 2 slots one located at the base of the laptop (the black bottom) and the other was located below the keypad. I searched a lot on the Internet but could not find the location of the 2nd slot.
The owner’s manual also did not mention the location of the DIMM B slot (the 2nd memory slot). See the details on the manual about how to remove the keyboard to reach the 2nd memory slot.
The key to reach the 2nd slot is to first remove the hinge cover (the cover that has three button saying Power, “Media Direct”, etc.). The hinge cover is not screwed so you can just lever it up using a thin, flat object and pop-it up, remove the three screws fixing the keyboad, pulling the keyboad out and right in the middle you will see the memory slot.
Hopefully, this post will help someone upgrading memory on their Dell XPS M1210.
Great Post, told me exactly what I needed to know.
How did you get on with addressing the memory though? due to using a 32 bit OS, I can only use 3GB of the ram I’ve installed, are you using a 64 bit OS?

LikeDislikeUnfortunately not! This does appear to be a known issue with Windows XP SP3 (32-bit). My OS only detects 3.25 GB of RAM. I think I’ll only use a linux with this much memory. More so coz Dell screwed me with my vista upgrade.

LikeDislikeHi
I also have a xpsm1210 … with on board video card … intel 945 etc ..
My bios says
4GB installed
3.2GB available
so it has nothing to do with the OS … what is the problem with the BIOS …why It can’t make all the 4GB available?
best
@mszanetti Actually, it has everything to do with the OS. Windows XP is a 32-bit OS which is not capable of making more than 3.25GB available. It’s lame! If you install a 64-bit OS like Vista x64, you will be able to utilize all the RAM!

LikeDislikeHi Rajat
I have the same model with intel i945pm chipset, after searching online, I found some people having problems with the OS recognizing 4Gb inspite of using 64bit OS. Because you alreay have 4Gb could you please check if your sys takes up 4gb when you run a 64bit os, I mean from a Linux live CD.
And which memory did you get, is it pc2-5300(667) or pc2-6400(800mhz)?
my understanding is that 945pm chipset only supports up to 667mhz but dell website recommends 800 MHz ( PC2-6400 ).

LikeDislikeHi guys,
I am not an expert in computers… I have a dell XPS too. I want to upgrade the memory. Currently I have 512 MB. If I buy a memory of 1gig, can I just put that one in the socket in the bottom of the laptop? Or do I need to buy 2×1 gig? Many thanks in advance!
Brian

There are 2 memory slots. 1 is at the bottom of the laptop and 1 under the keyboard. You can buy 1GB or 2GB DDR 2 PC2-5300 SODIMM Ram. Buy 2 pieces so you can increase Ram in both Ram slots. Google ” how to upgrade ram for dell M1210 ” for videos to help you
